Visiting Scotland

If you are thinking of planning a trip to Scotland, the first thing to remember is that you really want to be visiting in the summer as the winter is freezing and rainy. Because of this, most of the tourism industry and events that are most enjoyable occur between the months of May and September. You can still visit in the winter however – you could enjoy a spa break, some quality football matches or a hike across snowy mountains – but every activity that you could do in the winter you could still do in the summer and it would be far more enjoyable because of the weather. No one really likes the rain.

The ideal time to visit is in August. This is when several of Edinburgh’s eight international festivals are all occurring – you can enjoy the comedic wonders and intellectual splendours of the Fringe, Film and Book festivals which all boast performers, speakers and showings from every corner of the globe. This is also a great time to get on a boat and do some whale-spotting as it is when they are migrating round the northern tip of the country.
If you are planning to watch some football while visiting, I would undoubtedly recommend the Old Firm derby between Celtic and Glasgow Rangers as their sectarian rivalry means the fixture is always spicy to say the least. You can also get deals on a central Glasgow hotel by booking your match-day tickets at the same time as your accommodation so make sure you have a look online to save yourself money.
If you want to do some hiking through the Scottish Highlands, head for Cairngorms. You can also get deals on hotels in Cairngorms by looking online and there are hundreds of paths signposted by the National Trust so that you can be sure of seeing the most exceptional scenery without getting lost.
