Liverpool Versus Wigan Next Week

Liverpool welcome Martinez’s Wigan Athletic to Anfield next week for what is a crucial match for both sides. Liverpool must win to develop the momentum started by their three-nil victory over Everton last week thanks to a hat trick from Steven Gerrard while Wigan must pick up more points on the road if they are to avoid eh drop this season.
They are one of a batch of five teams that also includes Queen’s Park Rangers, Bolton, Wolves and Blackburn who are threatened with relegation and the questions of which two survive will be hugely dependent on away form. It is a trait of all sides battling in the bottom third of the table that one of the key problems is that they traditionally fail to pick up points on the road. Martinez will look to combat this recurring problem by playing a four-two-three-one formation against Liverpool in the hope of hitting the Merseysiders on the counter-attack.

I will be at the match next week as two tickets to the game were my birthday present from my brother and I am taking him along with me. We plan to stay in a Liverpool airport hotel so that we can catch our early morning flight back in the morning and because we got a great discount by booking our accommodation at the same time as buying our flights. I only hope that Wigan are able to salvage their season with a string of victories based on their ability to find the back of the net thanks to their counter-attacking football away from home so that I am not looking for hotels in Derby next season because Martinez’s men are playing in the Championship, a division lower.

Martinez needs to get his midfield set up in a way that means his lone striker – Rodellega – is provided with more than the meager number of half-chances per game that he is currently being presented with. Moses has had a terrific season marshaling the defence so far this season and needs to continue to do so. Anfield will be a cauldron because Liverpool need to pick up maximum points if they are to qualify for the Champions League next campaign by catching Arsenal over the next ten games and pinching fourth spot.
